Unusual names in the world of NFTs: how Square Enix is reimagining gaming characters

Square Enix, a renowned name in the gaming industry, has recently embarked on an innovative venture in the realm of blockchain gaming with their latest project, "Symbiogenesis." This groundbreaking game has introduced a series of Ethereum-based NFT heroes, each bearing a name that is as intriguing as it is unique. The gaming community has shown considerable interest, with significant amounts of Ethereum being exchanged for characters like "Egg" and "Starvation." These names, peculiar and unexpected, do not seem to have any direct correlation to the characters' appearances or attributes, leading to speculation about their origin. Could they be the product of an AI-generated process or part of a cryptographic sequence?

In a notable shift from its traditional approach, Square Enix has opted for everyday words to name the 500 character NFTs in the first chapter of "Symbiogenesis." This move marks a departure from the fantasy-inspired names like Sephiroth or Yuna, which fans have come to expect from the Final Fantasy series. The names range from mundane objects to abstract concepts, encompassing a wide array of terms like “Condiment,” “Test,” “Wart,” and “Mountaineering.” This unconventional naming strategy adds a layer of intrigue to the characters, each becoming a topic of conversation in their own right.

The rationale behind this unique naming convention remains shrouded in mystery. Despite attempts to reach out to Square Enix for an explanation, the inspiration behind names like “Cockscomb” and “Famine” remains unexplained.

"Symbiogenesis" was first announced in late 2022 and is slated for a full release on December 21. This free-to-play, browser-based story game introduces a questing system that requires players to have an NFT hero to participate in the final game quest. This quest is pivotal as it determines the ultimate outcome of the game's storyline.

In the world of "Symbiogenesis," the fate of the narrative could be decided by any of these uniquely named heroes. Whether it be “Egg,” “Affair,” with their distinctive attire, or the spiky-haired “Excuse,” the possibilities are as limitless as the imagination of the players themselves. This venture into the NFT space by Square Enix not only signifies a new direction for the company but also represents the evolving landscape of gaming, where blockchain technology and storytelling converge.
