Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson proposed a new application for blockchain technologies in decentralized science, focusing on challenges in academic publishing.
Publishing Business and Challenges for Authors
Mushtaq Bilal provided insight into the revenues of major academic publishers, noting that many earn billions. For instance, Elsevier earns $3.9 billion, Springer Nature $2 billion, Wolters Kluwer $1.6 billion, and Wiley $1.8 billion. However, despite their significant earnings, authors and reviewers do not receive any compensation while undertaking most of the work.
DeSci Solutions Using Blockchain
Charles Hoskinson emphasized that decentralized science (DeSci) could address the issue of inequitable revenue distribution. This approach offers free publishing services for authors and represents an open-source network using blockchain to share, validate, and curate scientific data without paywalls.
Supporting New Blockchain Projects
Recently, Hoskinson also showed support for the Sui blockchain project. He remarked on Sui becoming the first to integrate SCION as an alternative security protocol, highlighting his openness to new blockchain solutions.
Charles Hoskinson continues to support innovative blockchain initiatives, emphasizing the importance of technology in solving current scientific and network security challenges.
