The official EigenLayer X (formerly Twitter) account was hacked, resulting in fraudulent posts promoting a fake airdrop of EIGEN tokens.
Hack Incident Overview
The EigenLayer protocol, developed by Eigen Labs, was targeted in a hack on its official X account on Friday morning, leading to deceptive posts. Eigen Labs quickly confirmed the breach and urged users to avoid suspicious links and verify information on their official website, eigenlayer.xyz.
Details of the Scam Attack
The hackers used the compromised account to promote a fake airdrop of EIGEN tokens linked to the stakeholder airdrop's second season. According to Scam Sniffer, a crypto anti-scam platform, the malicious link was marked as a token reallocation event. The initial fake post was followed by two more, including a 'final call' urging token claims. However, the legitimate claim period had expired, exposing the posts as phishing attempts.
Similar Incidents and the Need for Enhanced Security
EigenLayer, which enables ether staking for network security, has become a significant target due to its rising prominence in the crypto arena. This hack marks the second incident since October, following an early October breach where 1.6 million EIGEN tokens were stolen. These incidents emphasize the need for better security measures and increased user vigilance amid a surge in similar scams targeting other known accounts, including celebrities like Hulk Hogan and corporate accounts.
The increasing frequency of social media account hacks calls for enhanced security measures and greater user caution within the cryptocurrency sector.
