The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) is currently evaluating the possibility of integrating cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin into the extensive investment environment within the European Union. Specifically, the focus lies on Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) diversifying their portfolios with cryptocurrencies alongside other asset classes.

ESMA has commenced deliberations to gather insights and opinions from industry experts concerning the feasibility and repercussions of incorporating cryptocurrencies into UCITS. Stakeholders are encouraged to provide their contributions by August 7, which could potentially result in UCITS becoming substantial mainstream funds with exposure to crypto assets.

It is worth mentioning that UCITS distinguishes itself from Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by adopting a diversified approach rather than a singular emphasis on crypto-focused funds. This approach is in line with EU regulations that prohibit exclusively autonomous crypto-focused investment mechanisms. The influence of such a product on Bitcoin's price remains uncertain, yet regulatory frameworks like the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation, which was adopted in 2023, seek to offer legal clarity and foster regional investment prospects.
