OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic launch initiative to train teachers to use AI in classrooms, investing $23 million.
Creation of the National Academy for AI Instruction
On Tuesday, the announcement was made about the establishment of the National Academy for AI Instruction (NAAI) aimed at training 400,000 K-12 teachers over the next five years. The funding will support the creation of programs that include free workshops and online learning modules for integrating AI into education.
Training and Program Topics
The training will cover AI use for lesson planning, grading, communication, and classroom management, emphasizing the importance of the teacher's role. The program is being implemented with the support of the American Federation of Teachers, underscoring the role of unions in education.
Growing Interest in AI in Education
The training initiative has been launched amid rising demand for AI in education across the US. In April, the president signed an executive order to establish a Task Force on AI Education aimed at strengthening public-private partnerships. Developers of the academy promise that the program will consider teachers' interests and address issues of ethics, bias, and data safety.
The initiative aims for teachers to use AI as a supportive tool to enhance teaching and engage students, which could significantly reshape the educational landscape.
