Cryptocurrency exchange Deribit has issued an alert regarding a new scam targeting crypto job seekers through LinkedIn.
Deribit's Warning
The well-known cryptocurrency exchange Deribit has raised concerns about a growing scam where fraudsters impersonate recruiters to deceive candidates, particularly targeting developers and senior professionals in the crypto industry. This was stated by Deribit's Chief Information Security Officer Anthony Sweeney in a post on X platform on March 19, highlighting that such tactics often appear in crypto before spreading elsewhere.
Scammers' Tactics
According to Deribit, scammers create fake LinkedIn profiles pretending to be company scouts and post high-paying job adverts. After establishing contact, they employ various tactics to scam victims out of money. Tactics include asking candidates to complete an 'online assessment' that installs malware, or offering fake jobs with 'exclusive pre-hire perks' like discounted company shares, only to steal money. Some even arrange in-person meetings for supposed contract signings to gain access to sensitive company data.
Security Tips
The exchange advises job seekers to remain cautious and verify recruiter profiles and job offers through official company channels. In January, CrowdStrike identified a phishing campaign using fake job offers to distribute malicious XMRig mining software, luring victims to a fake website to download harmful applications.
Deribit urges job seekers to remain vigilant and verify recruiter information to prevent potential scams.
