Roblox's Recent Study Highlights Increasing Influence of Virtual Fashion Trends within the Metaverse

Nov 15, 2023

Roblox, the renowned gaming platform, has recently unveiled its latest insights into virtual fashion trends within the metaverse. This report highlights the growing convergence of real-world and virtual fashion, a key factor in the platform's ongoing success, evidenced by a 38% surge in revenue in the previous quarter.

Titled "2023 Digital Expression, Fashion & Beauty Trends Report," this study draws on feedback from 1,500 Gen Z individuals in the United States and the United Kingdom, all of whom are active users of platforms like Roblox. A standout discovery from the report is the escalating impact of virtual fashion on Generation Z.

The survey found that a significant 84% of participants admit that the style of their virtual avatars influences their real-world fashion choices to some degree. Moreover, a notable 54% of those surveyed expressed being highly influenced by avatar fashion trends. Interestingly, more than half of the respondents, at 56%, prioritize the fashion choices for their avatars over their personal dressing style.

People are coming on to our platform — you know, 70 million people per day, all over the world — and they're connecting with people, their friends, and they're doing things together. And so it's really important to them, how they represent themselves.

The study indicates that Gen Z adults (22-26 years) have similar virtual fashion interests as younger members, showing its wide appeal in the generation. Roblox, embracing this trend, collaborates with major fashion brands and introduces features like Layered Clothing for realistic digital outfits. Its "Roblox Limiteds" feature also brings exclusive, limited edition avatar wearables, adding excitement and uniqueness, including in resale.

Contrary to the belief that interest in the metaverse has diminished lately, the report suggests otherwise. Roblox's financial performance in the third quarter was robust, with bookings of $839.5 million and revenue of $713.2 million, representing increases of 20% and 38%, respectively. The platform also experienced a 20% rise in daily active users, totaling 70.2 million gamers.

The report includes various statistics highlighting the growing trend in digital fashion: a 38% increase in avatar customization, a 15% uptick in purchases of digital fashion items and accessories in the first three quarters of 2023, and 84% of respondents acknowledging the significance of digital fashion in their lives. Furthermore, 53% believe that digital fashion has seen considerable growth over the past year.

Roblox's report underscores the escalating relevance of digital fashion and its influence on user experiences within the metaverse. It showcases the platform's role in providing a creative space for users, especially those in Gen Z, to explore and express their style, both in virtual and real-world settings.
