The Sandbox Raises $20 Million to Accelerate Metaverse Growth
The leading developer in the metaverse space, The Sandbox, has successfully raised $20 million through the issuance of convertible promissory notes. This strategic financing is aimed at propelling the growth and development of its virtual world platform.
Animoca Brands Corporation Limited, a company dedicated to advancing digital property rights for the open metaverse, and its subsidiary Bacasable Global Limited, the operator of The Sandbox, have recently concluded a successful fundraise through convertible promissory notes. These notes are capped at a valuation of $1 billion, offering immediate capital to investors with the option to convert their debt into equity in the future, potentially during a subsequent funding round or an IPO.
The funding round was led by Kingsway Capital and Animoca Brands, with the participation of LG Tech Ventures and True Global Ventures. The notes allow holders to convert into equity of Bacasable Global Limited under the same terms as existing preference shares.
Yat Siu, the co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, expressed gratitude for the unwavering support towards The Sandbox's vision. Siu emphasized the excitement about the future of user-generated content games within the platform.
The new financing will play a crucial role in advancing The Sandbox's concept of a decentralized virtual world merging culture with gaming. The company aims to enhance opportunities for creators on its platform by updating its Game Maker and VoxEdit 3D editor tools, introducing new social interactions and abilities for avatars, and expanding gameplay options through a new multiplayer rules system expected to launch in Beta later this year and to the public in 2025.
Siu also mentioned the McKinsey estimates that the metaverse could contribute $5 trillion to the global economy by 2030. Existing popular games like Minecraft and Roblox lack the provision of digital property rights to their users, while The Sandbox represents the shift in UGC games towards digital ownership.
Moreover, The Sandbox is working on a mobile version of its decentralized metaverse, projected to be launched in 2025.
Since its Alpha version release in November 2023, The Sandbox has achieved notable milestones, including over 1,000 user-generated experiences published on its virtual map and more than 5.7 million user accounts linked to crypto wallets. The platform has become a prominent mainstream application introducing new users to Web3 by leveraging fandom's influence to attract audiences to explore the metaverse.
The Sandbox has formed over 400 partnerships with renowned global brands like Lionsgate, Hellboy, Magnificent Century, Habbo, Space Invaders in Shibuya109, Notorious BIG, Warner Music, Ubisoft, Snoop Dogg, and Gucci. These collaborations are expected to result in over 100 experiences featuring these brands, planned for release throughout 2024.
