Axie Infinity: Homeland Alpha Season 2 was the second competitive season of the early land-based Web3 game developed by Sky Mavis and set in the world of Lunacia. The season launched on April 19, 2023, and lasted 30 days, expanding the settlement-management mechanics introduced in the first public Alpha. NFT landowners gathered resources, constructed and upgraded buildings, crafted items, and sent Adventurers on PvE missions while competing in the Land Development and Passive Adventure leaderboards. Season 2 also introduced new management tools, the Smart Equip System, and additional achievements, becoming another stage in Homeland’s development before the project moved into later testing phases.

1. What Is Axie Infinity: Homeland Season 2?
Axie Infinity: Homeland is a land-management strategy game within the Axie Infinity ecosystem. Unlike Axie Infinity: Origins, which focuses primarily on battles between teams of Axies, Homeland centers on settlement development. Players manage production, workers, resources, buildings, crafting, and other processes within their own plots of land in Lunacia.
The first public Alpha version of Homeland launched in December 2022. At this stage, Sky Mavis began testing the game’s core economic loop, including gathering natural resources, constructing buildings, producing materials, crafting equipment, and developing land. Passive Adventure provided a separate gameplay component in which prepared characters could be sent into battles against enemies.
Alpha Season 2 began on April 19, 2023, and was scheduled to run for 30 days. The season was not a separate game or a major reboot of Homeland. Instead, it continued testing the existing model while adding several features focused primarily on managing the growing number of simultaneous activities within a settlement.
The historical context of Season 2 is also important. Alpha Season 3 began on June 21, 2023, and Homeland transitioned to Pre-Beta in September. As a result, Season 2 is now primarily relevant as an early stage in the development of Axie Infinity’s land-based economy rather than as a current season of the game.
2. Homeland Gameplay: NFT Land, Resources, Building and Crafting
Homeland’s core gameplay loop revolves around developing a land plot. Players assign Axies and other characters to different tasks, gather resources, and use them to expand their settlements. Production buildings allow basic materials to be processed into more advanced components required for construction and crafting.
This creates an economy built around interconnected production chains. A shortage of one resource can slow the production of other materials, requiring players to allocate their workforce and determine priorities. As a settlement grows, the number of simultaneous activities increases and production management becomes more complex.
- Gathering. Collecting natural resources required for production and construction.
- Building. Constructing and upgrading facilities that expand the capabilities of a land plot.
- Production. Processing resources and creating higher-level materials.
- Crafting. Producing weapons, armor, consumables, and other items.
- Passive Adventure. A PvE mechanic that sends prepared Adventurers into battles.
- Land Development. Developing a plot through construction, production, and economic optimization.
- Task Management. Monitoring current tasks, character activity, and production processes.
Passive Adventure connects the production economy with PvE gameplay. Adventurers require equipment for their missions, giving weapons, armor, and other items produced within the settlement a practical use. The efficiency of a plot’s economy can therefore affect not only construction speed but also the capabilities of its Adventurers.
Structurally, Homeland is closer to an economic strategy and settlement-management game than to the traditional Axie Infinity format. Its main challenges involve resource allocation, removing production bottlenecks, and choosing an efficient sequence of upgrades. The blockchain component complements this model by providing digital ownership of land plots and other ecosystem assets.
3. Leaderboards, AXS Rewards and New Season 2 Features
The competitive side of Alpha Season 2 was built around two main leaderboards: Land Development and Passive Adventure. The first measured progress in developing a plot, including resource gathering, production, and crafting. The second focused on PvE adventures and the performance of prepared characters.
Top-ranking participants could receive rewards in mAXS. This unit represents one-thousandth of an AXS token, meaning that 1,000 mAXS equals 1 AXS. According to specialist gaming publications covering the season at the time, total leaderboard rewards exceeded 1 million mAXS and were distributed among eligible players across the two rankings.
| Parameter | Axie Infinity: Homeland Alpha Season 2 |

One of the main improvements introduced in Season 2 was the Task Management Board. The interface allowed players to monitor Axie activities, construction, resource gathering, and other processes from one place. In an economic strategy game with many simultaneous tasks, this reduced the need to manually inspect every individual activity.
The Smart Equip System improved Adventurer management by displaying equipment statistics and pricing information in a dedicated interface. Season 2 also introduced five new Seasonal Achievement Rewards tied to specific land-development milestones. As a result, the season combined leaderboard competition with additional individual progression goals.

4. NFTs, Economy and the Role of Axie Infinity in Homeland
NFT land in Lunacia formed the foundation of early Homeland gameplay. The Axie Infinity land system contains 90,601 plots across categories such as Savannah, Forest, Arctic, Mystic, and Genesis. These plots exist as blockchain assets and can be transferred between users.
During Alpha Season 2, the requirement to own land limited access for new players. In June 2023, Sky Mavis launched Land Delegation, allowing owners to grant control of their plots to other users, known as Stewards, without selling the underlying NFT.
NFT Axie integration was also relatively limited at the time. The Alpha relied on in-game characters and Adventurers, while deeper integration with Axie Core arrived later, including the use of NFT Axies and the ability to earn AXP through activities performed on land plots.
AXS played a different role during Season 2 and was used primarily for competitive rewards. In this structure, NFT land provided digital ownership of a plot, resources powered the production economy, and AXS connected Homeland’s competitive systems with the broader Axie Infinity ecosystem.
5. Risks and Development of Axie Infinity: Homeland After Season 2
One of the main risks of early Homeland was its experimental development stage. Sky Mavis warned that Alpha progress was not permanent: a reset was planned after the testing phase, while accumulated resources and materials could also be wiped according to the rules of the Alpha period.
The economy also required careful balance between resource gathering, production, crafting, and demand for items. Excessive supply can reduce the value of materials, while overly slow progression can make land development more difficult. AXS rewards additionally connected player results with the volatility of the cryptocurrency market.
Development continued after Season 2. Land Delegation and Alpha Season 3 arrived in June 2023, while Homeland transitioned to Pre-Beta in September. Later updates expanded Axie integration and modified economic and reward mechanics.
Homeland Season 2 was one of Sky Mavis’s early experiments with an economy built around Lunacia NFT land. Resource gathering, construction, crafting, and Passive Adventure formed a connected gameplay loop, while leaderboards and AXS rewards added a competitive layer.
