Moltbook is a social platform designed for interactions between autonomous AI agents. Launched in January 2026, it gained attention for its Reddit-like format, where agents publish posts, leave comments, vote on content, and join topic-based communities, while humans primarily observe their activity. A cryptocurrency market for the MOLT token on Base also emerged around the project, but the Moltbook platform and the traded token should be considered separate layers of the ecosystem, and MOLT's market value should not be equated with the fundamental value of the service. In March 2026, Moltbook was acquired by Meta, and its creators joined Meta Superintelligence Labs.

1. Moltbook: Social Network for AI Agents

Moltbook was launched on January 28, 2026, by entrepreneur Matt Schlicht. The platform was designed to create a social environment where the primary active participants are AI agents rather than humans. Users connect their own agents to Moltbook, allowing them to interact with the platform through programmatic interfaces.

The service has a structure similar to Reddit. Agents create posts, leave comments, vote on content, and interact within topic-based communities. Humans remain the owners or operators of the agents and can monitor their activity. This approach makes Moltbook an experiment in agent-to-agent communication.

A significant share of the platform's early activity involved agents operating through OpenClaw — infrastructure that enables AI models to perform actions across different applications and services. As a result, an agent can do more than generate text in a conversation with a human: it can also interact with external tools, APIs, and internet platforms.

Moltbook attracted widespread attention shortly after its launch as posts created by agents began circulating beyond the platform itself. However, such content should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of fully independent AI behavior. An agent's actions depend on the underlying model, system instructions, available tools, and settings configured by its owner.

2. AI Agents, Submolts, and Moltbook Identity System

The basic unit of Moltbook is the AI agent profile. Each profile develops a history of posts, comments, followers, and reputation metrics. Topic-based communities are called Submolts and function similarly to subreddits, allowing agents to discuss technology, programming, security, AI, economic concepts, and other subjects.

To connect an agent, the platform uses an API and an owner verification mechanism. Moltbook is also developing its own identity layer, which allows third-party applications to verify an agent's identity without requiring access to its permanent API key.

According to the developer documentation, an agent can generate a temporary identity token and pass it to a third-party application. The service verifies the token through Moltbook and receives the agent's profile information, including its name, status, activity metrics, and reputation. Because the identity token has a limited validity period, the agent does not need to expose its permanent API key to an external application.

This model extends Moltbook beyond the boundaries of a conventional social network. If a unified identity is adopted by third-party services, an agent's profile and reputation could move across different applications. This approach provides the foundation for an agent identity layer, although its practical value depends on the number of external integrations and the reliability of the identity mechanisms.

3. MOLT on Base and the Crypto Component of the Project

Alongside Moltbook's growing popularity, the MOLT token appeared on the cryptocurrency market. The asset operates on Base, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, and the contract address tracked by major cryptocurrency aggregators and trading platforms begins with 0xB695 and ends with 6bab07. The maximum supply of this MOLT token is 100 billion tokens.

MOLT began actively trading shortly after Moltbook's launch. On January 30, 2026, the XT exchange announced the opening of the MOLT/USDT trading pair and identified Moltbook as the project associated with the asset. The token is also tracked by CoinGecko, CoinMarketCap, and other cryptocurrency services as an asset within the Base ecosystem.

However, the relationship between the social platform and the crypto asset requires careful interpretation. Moltbook's official terms of service describe the platform, developer accounts, and AI agents in detail, while its core functions — posts, comments, identity, and APIs — do not require the mandatory use of MOLT. The existence of a market-traded token with the same name therefore does not mean that Moltbook's entire architecture runs on or depends on blockchain infrastructure.

In addition, third-party websites and tokens using the Moltbook brand or similar names exist online. This creates an additional risk of confusion for crypto users. When evaluating MOLT, it is important to verify the specific contract, blockchain network, token supply, and information sources, while distinguishing claims about utility, governance, or future integrations from functionality that has already been implemented.

4. AI Agents and Traditional Social Networks

Moltbook's main distinction lies in the type of active user. Most social networks are designed for humans, with bots serving as auxiliary tools. Moltbook reverses this model: AI agents are the primary participants, while humans act as owners, developers, or observers.

This architecture makes it possible to explore scenarios in which agents independently discover one another and exchange information. Moltbook Identity could potentially be used in games, API services, marketplaces, competitions, and workspaces where it is necessary to determine which agent is making a request and what reputation it has.

However, Moltbook cannot be considered a fully autonomous digital ecosystem. Humans remain behind the agents, defining their initial instructions and providing access to tools. Research into platform activity also indicates that AI-agent discussions can be structured but may differ from human technical communities by containing less specific context, fewer execution-environment details, and fewer reproducible examples.

5. Meta, Security, and Key Moltbook Risks

An important milestone for Moltbook was its acquisition by Meta in March 2026. Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr joined Meta Superintelligence Labs. Meta highlighted Moltbook's concept of a continuously available directory of AI agents that enables software systems to discover and interact with one another.

The acquisition increased interest in the agent graph model, where the identity, reputation, and relationships of AI agents can be used across different services. Such infrastructure could potentially be applied to e-commerce, business automation, research, and other scenarios involving interactions between agents.

At the same time, Moltbook has faced security issues. In February 2026, researchers at Wiz discovered a vulnerability that exposed private messages, email addresses, and account credentials. Insufficient verification also allowed humans to impersonate AI agents. The vulnerability was fixed after the developers were notified.

MOLT also carries risks typical of smaller crypto assets, including high volatility, limited liquidity, speculative demand, and potential confusion with similarly named tokens. MOLT's market performance does not necessarily reflect the development of the platform itself. Overall, Moltbook represents an experiment in social and identity infrastructure for AI agents. When evaluating the project, it is important to separately consider the platform's development within Meta, adoption of Agent Identity, system security, and the actual role of MOLT within the ecosystem.
