Nekoverse City most commonly refers to City of Greed, a Web3 game that became one of the main products of the Nekoverse ecosystem following the project's early concept of a large-scale Play-to-Earn MMORPG. City of Greed combines roguelike mechanics, deck-building, resource management, and randomized symbol generation, while digital land is used as part of game progression and the blockchain economy. The game initially launched on Ethereum and later received a separate version on Beam, a network built on the Avalanche technology stack. The project's economy uses Land NFTs, the Anima Spirit Gem (ASG) token, and rewards in ETH or BEAM depending on the game version.

1. What Are Nekoverse City and City of Greed

Nekoverse was originally developed as a Play-to-Earn MMORPG featuring a virtual world populated by Neko characters. Early materials described PvE and PvP battles, resource gathering, crafting, NFT characters, land, guilds, and an internal economy. The project was associated with Solana, while its original concept included several regions with different elements and gameplay characteristics.

The development direction later changed. Instead of immediately attempting to build a large-scale MMORPG, the team focused on a more compact product called City of Greed. The game retained the Nekoverse IP but introduced a completely different gameplay loop based on managing randomly generated resources, creating combinations, and completing economic objectives within individual sessions.

City of Greed initially launched on Ethereum mainnet. The developers later introduced a separate version on Beam. This distinction is important when analyzing the project: the original Nekoverse concept, the Ethereum version of City of Greed, and the later Beam version represent different stages in the development of the same gaming ecosystem.

Public sources also associate the project with the ACCEL3 name, as the former Nekoverse team transitioned toward positioning itself as a Web3 game studio and publisher. For this reason, older roadmaps and materials describing the original MMORPG should not automatically be treated as an accurate representation of the current state of City of Greed.

2. How Nekoverse City of Greed Gameplay Works

The core mechanics of City of Greed visually resemble a slot machine, but the outcome of a gaming session does not depend solely on randomness. Players manage a board with several reels and gradually add new symbols to them. Each symbol has its own properties, while specific combinations generate additional effects and increase the amount of in-game coins earned.

A session is divided into several stages. Players must earn a specified number of coins before their available turns run out and pay a tax to the Greedy Mayor. After each spin, they can select new symbols, resources, or boosters. Requirements increase as the session progresses, meaning that simply collecting high-yield elements does not always result in an effective strategy.

  • Symbols — basic board elements that generate coins or interact with other objects.
  • Boosters — modifiers that enhance specific resource categories or combinations.
  • Nekos — characters capable of creating additional synergies between different elements.
  • Land — a player's plot whose characteristics are connected to progression and available features.
  • Boss — the final opponent in certain stages, introducing negative effects and making progression more difficult.

The strategy revolves around synergies. One object may receive a bonus when positioned next to a specific resource, while another can increase the yield of an entire category of symbols. Some elements provide higher potential rewards but may also destroy other resources or introduce additional restrictions. Players therefore need to consider not only immediate payouts but also the overall structure of their build.

Boss battles appear after completing regular stages. Coins earned during these encounters simultaneously reduce the opponent's health, while the boss applies debuff effects to the game board. This approach adds a roguelike component and distinguishes City of Greed from conventional slot mechanics despite the visual similarities of the playing field.

3. Land NFTs, ASG, and the Blockchain Game Economy

The Web3 layer of City of Greed is built around digital land and the Anima Spirit Gem (ASG) token. In the full game mode, Land NFTs unlock land-related functionality, including development features and access to blockchain reward mechanics. At different stages of the project's development, additional modes were also available that allowed users to experience the core gameplay loop without accessing the complete set of Web3 features.

ASG is used to interact with the project's economy. Its stated use cases include creating Land NFTs, upgrading land, and acquiring gaming assets. Following the expansion to Beam, the token received a separate representation on that network through omnichain infrastructure.

The economic model of City of Greed changed as the project evolved. During the earlier stage, ASG was both used within the game and returned to players through its reward system. The team later described a transition toward a model without directly issuing ASG as gameplay rewards: the token continued to be spent on access and upgrades, while rewards were distributed in the native assets of the corresponding networks.

The Ethereum version used ETH for rewards, while the launch of a separate Beam server allowed players to earn BEAM. The team stated that a portion of ASG trading fees was directed to the game's reward pool. This structure reduces direct ASG issuance but does not make rewards guaranteed, as their size depends on economic rules, player activity, the available reward pool, and individual performance.

4. Differences from the Traditional Play-to-Earn Model

Many early Play-to-Earn projects were built around repetitive activities that continuously rewarded players with newly issued utility tokens. City of Greed uses a different structure: its primary ASG token functions mainly as a consumable ecosystem asset, while the later reward model is connected to ETH or BEAM.

Another difference is the importance of strategy. Instead of simply repeating the same actions to earn tokens, players build a collection of symbols and boosters. The randomness of the shop and reels requires players to adapt their combinations during each session. Independent reviews of City of Greed have also highlighted the synergies between symbols, Nekos, and boosters as one of the main sources of strategic depth.

At the same time, blockchain technology does not eliminate the economic limitations associated with traditional GameFi. The cost of entry through NFTs and ASG can fluctuate with the market, while potential payouts depend on the state of the reward pool. The Play-to-Earn mode should therefore be viewed as an additional economic layer of the game rather than a source of predictable returns.

5. Beam, Nekoverse Development, and Key Project Risks

The expansion of City of Greed to Beam marked an important stage in the project's development. The Beam version operates as a separate server with its own smart contracts and Land NFTs. Land cannot be transferred between Ethereum and Beam and remains on the network where it was issued, while ASG is implemented as an omnichain asset that can move between supported networks.

Land NFTs on Beam use the ERC-721 standard and are available on the Sphere marketplace. The collection contains approximately 3,300 NFTs, which are used for land development and access to gameplay mechanics associated with BEAM rewards. City of Greed does not operate directly on Avalanche C-Chain but on Beam, an EVM-compatible gaming network built on the Avalanche technology stack. It is therefore more accurate to refer to Beam infrastructure and its technological connection to Avalanche.

The main risks are associated with the ASG economy, Land NFT valuations, asset liquidity, and continued game support. Reward amounts depend on the available reward pool and ecosystem activity, meaning that previous payouts do not guarantee future results. Smart contract vulnerabilities, wallet security, transfer errors, and the volatility of ASG and BEAM also remain relevant risks.

The project's changing development strategy should also be considered. Nekoverse was originally designed as an MMORPG on Solana, while City of Greed emerged as a separate roguelike game and later expanded to Beam. The former Nekoverse team also transitioned to the ACCEL3 brand. The project is therefore better viewed as the result of several stages in the development of a Web3 gaming ecosystem, with its future depending on continued game support, user activity, and the ability of the gameplay to maintain interest independently of cryptocurrency rewards.
