The Machines Arena is a fast-paced hero shooter developed by Directive Games, combining 4v4 team-based PvP battles, solo PvE modes, and a Web3 economy built around digital collectibles. The project became part of the Ronin ecosystem following a partnership with Sky Mavis, the developer of Axie Infinity and creator of the Ronin network, meaning its connection to Axie is infrastructural rather than narrative. Blockchain technology is used for ownership and trading of selected in-game assets, while standard matches operate through conventional game infrastructure and do not require every action to be recorded onchain. In January 2025, The Machines Arena launched on Steam as a free-to-play game, maintaining a model that allows users to start playing without purchasing NFTs or cryptocurrency.

1. What Is The Machines Arena and How Is It Connected to Axie Infinity?

The Machines Arena was developed by Directive Games as a top-down hero shooter. Players control heroes equipped with their own weapons and sets of abilities while participating in fast-paced battles viewed from above. The core experience focuses on team tactics, positioning, movement, and effective use of character abilities rather than blockchain mechanics.

The project's Web3 direction was introduced in March 2023 alongside a partnership between Directive Games and Sky Mavis. The Machines Arena was integrated with Ronin, the blockchain network originally developed for Axie Infinity that later expanded into infrastructure for third-party Web3 games. Therefore, the connection between The Machines Arena and Axie primarily comes from their shared technological ecosystem.

The game itself is not part of the Axie Infinity universe. It has its own characters, maps, modes, and economy. Ronin serves as the connecting layer, providing blockchain infrastructure for Digital Collectibles and other Web3 components, while Sky Mavis has participated in the project's development as a partner and advisor.

Blockchain interaction is not required to access the core game. Users can play The Machines Arena without first purchasing NFTs or cryptocurrency. This structure separates the main gameplay loop from the digital economy and lowers the entry barrier for players who do not use Web3 wallets.

2. How PvP, PvE, Heroes, and Competitive Gameplay Work

The core of The Machines Arena consists of team-based 4v4 PvP matches. Players select heroes with different abilities and weapons, after which teams compete according to the objectives of the selected mode. The top-down perspective provides a broad view of the battlefield, but success still depends on movement, accuracy, positioning, timing, and coordination with teammates.

Characters differ in their combat roles and playstyles. Heroes presented in official materials include Tesla, Noble, Nightcore, Pyro, Daye, Devol, Riot, Ozymandias, and Bravo Zulu. These differences influence team composition, as an effective lineup depends not only on individual damage output but also on how the abilities of multiple heroes complement one another.

In addition to PvP, the game includes PvE content. One notable mode is Death Run, where players fight enemies while attempting to achieve a strong result. Its structure incorporates risk management: the player must decide when to end a run and secure the progress already made, creating a choice between continuing for a better result and preserving the current score.

In January 2025, the game became available on Steam under a free-to-play model. Its store page describes it as a fast-paced top-down hero shooter featuring PvP and solo challenges. For ranked competition, the developers also describe normalized hero statistics intended to reduce the impact that differences between players' collectible assets could have on competitive results.

3. The Machines Arena Compared With Other Web3 Games

The Machines Arena belongs to a category of projects in which conventional gameplay operates separately from the blockchain economy. Players first interact with a hero shooter featuring PvP and PvE, while the Web3 layer adds ownership of selected digital items and the ability to interact with them beyond a conventional game account.

This model differs from early Play-to-Earn games in which purchasing an NFT could be a prerequisite for accessing the game. It also differs from fully onchain games: hero movement, shooting, ability activation, and match resolution are not processed as individual transactions on Ronin.

Project Genre Web3 Infrastructure Core Model
The Machines Arena Top-down hero shooter Ronin PvP/PvE and Digital Collectibles
Axie Infinity Strategy and creature battles Ronin Digital assets and game economy
Pixels Social farming game Ronin Resources, social gameplay, and Web3 economy
Gods Unchained Trading card game Immutable Ownership and trading of digital cards
Parallel Sci-fi TCG Ethereum Collectible cards and competitive gameplay

A key distinction is that execution speed is particularly important for a hero shooter. Processing every gameplay action through a blockchain would introduce additional complexity into fast-paced matches. Ronin is therefore used primarily as a digital ownership and economic layer, while combat itself is handled by the game's conventional infrastructure.

This architecture allows the project to develop Web3 features without turning the entire game into a decentralized application. However, digital ownership still depends on developer support for the corresponding items: the existence of an NFT on a blockchain does not by itself guarantee that the asset will retain permanent utility inside the game.

4. Ronin, Digital Collectibles, and the TMA Token Economy

The Web3 economy of The Machines Arena is built around Ronin and Digital Collectibles. Blockchain infrastructure allows selected rewards and cosmetic items to be associated with a user's wallet, while supported assets can interact with services across the Sky Mavis ecosystem. The project's website also provides access to Mavis Marketplace for supported collectible skins.

The game uses mechanics based around Circuits. Green, Red, and Golden Circuits can be collected and used within specific reward systems, while additional economic mechanics include the Compactor, Circuit Roulette, and Daily Jackpot. These systems extend progression beyond standard PvP matches and connect gameplay activity with collectible rewards.

  • Team-based 4v4 PvP battles.
  • Dedicated PvE modes, including Death Run.
  • Heroes with different abilities and weapons.
  • Digital Collectibles integrated with Ronin.
  • Collectible skins and other digital rewards.
  • Green, Red, and Golden Circuits within the reward system.
  • The Compactor for interacting with valuable Circuits.
  • Daily Jackpot and Circuit Roulette as additional mechanics.
  • Mavis Marketplace for supported digital assets.

Another component of the economy is the native TMA token. The published tokenomics specifies a maximum supply of 1 billion TMA. The largest allocation, Community, accounts for 32.75% of the supply, followed by 20% for the Seed Round and 15% for Directive Games. Team and Airdrop allocations each account for 10%, while the remaining supply is distributed among liquidity, marketing, advisors, and other categories.

Different allocations follow separate unlock schedules. For example, Directive Games tokens have a 24-month cliff followed by 24 months of vesting, while the Community allocation is distributed over 48 months. These parameters are important when analyzing the economy because the maximum supply does not indicate how much TMA is circulating at a particular point in time.

5. Risks and Prospects of The Machines Arena in Web3 Gaming

One of the main challenges for The Machines Arena is maintaining both a competitive game and a tokenized economy. Hero shooters depend heavily on character balance, matchmaking quality, server stability, and a sufficiently active player base. Blockchain features cannot compensate for weaknesses in the core gameplay loop if PvP fails to retain players.

The economic model introduces additional risks. The market value of Digital Collectibles and TMA can depend on demand, liquidity, and community activity, while their gameplay utility is determined by developer decisions. The market price of a digital item should therefore be considered separately from its practical value within a particular game mode.

Tokenomics also requires consideration of the gradual expansion of circulating supply. Investor, team, developer, and community allocations have their own cliff and vesting periods, meaning potential market pressure depends on the actual unlock schedule. A large Community allocation provides resources for developing the game economy, but the sustainability of the model ultimately depends on whether demand for the token emerges beyond reward distribution.

At the same time, The Machines Arena demonstrates a Web3 gaming model in which cryptocurrency is not required for a player's first interaction with the product. Free-to-play access and the separation of combat mechanics from blockchain infrastructure allow the game to offer the core experience first, while digital ownership remains an additional layer for users who choose to interact with it.

The project's long-term prospects will depend on player activity, the development of PvP and PvE content, demand for Digital Collectibles, and the role of TMA within the economy. Its connection to the Axie Infinity ecosystem through Sky Mavis and Ronin provides access to specialized Web3 gaming infrastructure, but it does not guarantee the success of the game itself. Ultimately, the key factor will be whether The Machines Arena can maintain competitive gameplay while using blockchain technology in areas where digital ownership provides meaningful additional utility.
