In 2023, the damage caused by hacker attacks amounted to $2.61 billion, and $674.9 million of this amount was recovered, according to a report by PeckShield experts.

During 2023, more than 600 major attacks in the field of cryptocurrencies were recorded, which led to losses of about $2.61 billion. Of this amount, $1.51 billion was lost as a result of hacking, and another $1.1 billion was lost due to various fraudulent schemes. It should be noted that the level of damage decreased by 27.78% compared to 2022.

According to the report, the most vulnerable sector remains DeFi (decentralized financial protocols), which suffered a share of 67% of the total damage. Among the methods of hacker attacks, the most common remains the method with instant loans, which led to 40% of all losses.

An interesting fact is that the amount that was returned increased fivefold in 2023, reaching $674.9 million. This indicates improved coordination between crypto experts and law enforcement agencies.

According to PeckShield, the list of the largest hacks in 2023 includes the following projects and platforms:

Mixin Network;
Euler Finance;
Poloniex and HTX;
Orbit Chain.
Statistics from Chainalysis also confirm the general trend towards reducing losses from such incidents in 2023, although the figures may vary slightly.
