Q* and OpenAI - the development of a secret system and the firing of Sam Altman

Dec 4, 2023

Sam Altman, the former head of OpenAI, has actually confirmed the information about his dismissal due to his participation in the development of a secret artificial intelligence system codenamed Q* ("Q star"), the Daily Mail reports.

According to the publication, several employees warned the company's management that the Q* project was becoming so advanced that it could successfully handle math exams and critical thinking tasks. These warnings were ignored by Altman, which was allegedly one of the reasons for his dismissal.

During the interview, Altman did not deny the existence of the secret program that some employees say was the basis for his dismissal. Instead, he refrained from making specific comments about it, saying: "No specific comment on this unfortunate leak".

Artificial intelligence experts have expressed fears about the creation of general artificial intelligence (AGI), which some warn could be more powerful than humanity can control. Such cautions are consistent with the idea of a singularity, where technology becomes so powerful and intelligent that it surpasses human capabilities, thereby altering the course of human evolution.

Former Google engineer, Ray Kurzweil, previously predicted that the Singularity could occur as early as 2045. Nevertheless, the safety and ethical aspects of AGI development remain key issues that require careful discussion and regulation in the context of the long-term vision for artificial intelligence.
