Scammers stole $47 million in February 2024

Mar 10, 2024

The Scam Sniffer team published a report on cryptocurrency fraud in February 2024, indicating that about 57,000 people lost approximately $47 million due to digital currency scams. This shows a 75% decrease in the number of cases in which victims lost over $1 million per fraud compared to January.

The study revealed that the bulk of the thefts (78%) were committed on the Ethereum network, while the greatest interest among attackers was caused by tokens of the ERC-20 standard, which accounted for 86% of the stolen funds. In most cases, fraud occurred through phishing transaction signatures, including methods such as Permit, EnhanceAllowance, and Uniswap Permit2.

Scammers attracted victims to fake sites through comments from fake Twitter accounts, which has become a widespread problem on a global level. To create an impression of legitimacy, they actively used bots to generate accounts and interact on behalf of famous personalities and representatives of the crypto industry.

Phishing attacks, characterized by attempts by hackers to lure confidential data (for example, access to accounts and wallets) under the guise of reliable sources, are carried out through various channels, including e-mail, messengers and social networks. These attacks often rely on social engineering techniques, the purpose of which is to deceive victims to obtain their personal data or redirect them to fake sites that mimic real resources.

To ensure protection against such threats, it is necessary to exercise caution, carefully verify the accuracy of information and avoid providing personal data through questionable channels. It is also recommended to use reliable antivirus software and regularly update your security systems.
