The EU Commission, along with other entities, has decided to temporarily halt advertisements on Elon Musk's X platform

Nov 17, 2023

The European Commission has declared a suspension of advertising on Elon Musk's X platform due to concerns about the spread of disinformation and complaints they have received. Dana Spinant, the Commission’s Deputy Chief Spokesperson, confirmed this decision and noted that it aims to prevent potential damage to the Commission's reputation. This move comes in response to recent complaints that EU staff members were using the platform to target ads related to political opinions and religious beliefs, particularly in the context of the Israel-Hamas conflict. A privacy rights not-for-profit organization called Noyb filed a complaint against the EU Commission in this regard and indicated that they might consider filing a report against Elon Musk and his X platform for allowing such ad targeting, citing misuse of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of EU regulations.

Additionally, Elon Musk faced controversy for sharing a post on X that agreed with an anti-Semitic message during the Israel-Hamas situation. This led to criticism and the withdrawal of advertisements from the platform. IBM also suspended advertising on X due to its appearance next to pro-Nazi content, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech and discrimination. Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, addressed the issue, reaffirming the platform's commitment to combating discrimination and hatred.
