The Simpsons' embrace NFTs in treehouse of Horror XXXIV

Nov 6, 2023

On the much-anticipated Halloween special last Sunday, "The Simpsons" unveiled its thirty-fourth "Treehouse of Horror" episode, featuring Bart's transformation into a non-fungible token (NFT) thanks to Homer's actions. In an intriguing twist, Marge steps in to rescue Bart from the depths of the blockchain, only for Homer to willingly embrace the NFT world afterward.

Titled "Wild Barts Can't Be Token," the latest installment of "Treehouse of Horror XXXIV" playfully explored the realm of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). In this episode, Bart accidentally finds himself turned into an NFT on the blockchain, mirroring the NFT craze that has captured the imagination of Springfield's fictional universe.

Following Homer's accidental creation of the Bart NFT, he's ecstatic to discover that its value has surged to $1.5 million. The digital token portrays Bart, with his pants down and a mischievous grin, standing on a pedestal. When Homer shows Marge that Bart's image is now securely stored on his smartphone, Marge lets out a startled scream. "He's an NFT," Homer explains to his distressed wife.

In this episode, Marge embarks on a mission to rescue Bart, enlisting the help of the "enlightened intellects who safeguard the crypto-verse." Kylie Jenner lends her expertise to assist Marge in crafting her strategy. Transforming herself into an NFT, Marge navigates the blockchain metaverse, with Jenner providing the key to liberate Bart from the digital ledger.

Ultimately, Marge's mission proves to be a success. However, Homer, seduced by the idea of becoming an NFT, soon realizes that the excitement surrounding NFTs has waned by the time he joins in, at least within the fictional world of Springfield. "The Simpsons" has previously ventured into the realm of cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin (BTC), with the 18th episode of the 32nd season featuring the BTC price ticker as the infinity symbol.

During the episode's 2021 broadcast, BTC was trading above the $60,000 mark. In the previous season, the 13th episode featured Jim Parsons from "The Big Bang Theory," providing a brief explanation of cryptocurrency. Before the 2020 broadcast with Parsons, "The Simpsons" made references to bitcoin (BTC) in two earlier episodes as well.
