Arbitrum unlocks ARB tokens worth $2.32 billion

Mar 11, 2024

Arbitrum is about to witness a significant event in its ecosystem: on March 16th, the Layer 2 blockchain platform Layer 2 is set to unlock ARB tokens totaling $2.32 billion. This event involves a one-time distribution of approximately 1.1 billion ARB tokens, constituting around 76% of their current circulating supply. Out of this amount, 673.5 million tokens (approximately $1.41 billion at current rates) will be allocated to the Arbitrum team and consultants, while 438.25 million tokens (about $915 million) are earmarked for project investors. This process, known as Cliff Unlock, implies that the tokens will not be accessible until a certain unlock date.

The cryptocurrency community is actively discussing the upcoming event, anticipating its impact on the price of ARB tokens. Some market participants plan to open short positions expecting a decline in token value, while others have already sold their assets, fearing negative consequences of the unlock. In contrast, crypto influencer JJcycles expressed the opinion that the ARB distribution might replicate the scenario of Solana (SOL) tokens, the price of which, conversely, increased after a similar event.

In addition to Arbitrum, token releases from several other projects are expected this week, including Aptos, ApeCoin, Flow, CyberConnect, Moonbeam, and Euler, with a total unlock amounting to approximately $2.7 billion. These events will energize the market and could lead to significant price fluctuations in the respective assets.
