In a significant crackdown on illegal cryptocurrency activities, law enforcement in Russia's Republic of Buryatia has dismantled a mobile mining operation that cleverly evaded detection. According to the conclusions drawn in the analytical report, this operation, involving five local residents, highlights the ongoing challenges authorities face in regulating cryptocurrency mining in the region.

Mobile Mining Operation Discovered

The suspects ingeniously set up their mining equipment inside a cargo truck, allowing them to relocate frequently and illegally tap into electricity networks. Investigators found that three of the individuals had outfitted the truck with nearly 100 cryptocurrency mining devices, while two others facilitated the operation by managing unauthorized power connections and driving the vehicle.

Impact on Local Infrastructure

This mobile mining farm repeatedly accessed electricity grids without permission, leading to damages estimated at around 3 million rubles. Authorities have expressed concern that such operations not only strain the regional power infrastructure but also pose significant safety risks to the community.

Seizure of Assets and Legal Consequences

During searches of the suspects' homes, police confiscated mining hardware and approximately 65 million rubles in cash, along with notebooks that contained detailed operational records. A criminal case has been initiated under Article 165 of the Russian Criminal Code, which could result in penalties of up to two years in prison or fines reaching 300,000 rubles for those involved.

In a recent incident, a cryptocurrency trader's wallet was compromised while using hotel WiFi, highlighting the risks associated with public networks. This event contrasts with the recent crackdown on illegal mining operations in Buryatia. For more details, see this article.
