Binance's Head of Counter-Terrorism Resigns After Two-Year Tenure

Nov 17, 2023

According to her LinkedIn profile, Jennifer Hicks, who served as Binance's Senior Counter-Terrorism Official, has departed from the cryptocurrency exchange.

As per her LinkedIn profile, Hicks left the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange earlier this month, concluding her nearly two-year tenure with Binance. Prior to her role at Binance, she held positions as an investigative specialist at Chainalysis and served in the U.S. Navy. Bloomberg was the first to break the news of her departure.

Cryptocurrency's involvement in financing terrorism has recently garnered significant attention in the United States. During Hicks' time with Binance, it appears she was based in the U.S. A report alleged that Hamas, along with other militant groups, had raised millions in cryptocurrency ahead of a violent attack on Israel. In response, U.S. lawmakers have called for President Joe Biden to provide more information regarding the potential use of cryptocurrency by Hamas.

Subsequent to the release of the report, blockchain forensics company Elliptic stated that recent statistics, which were used to illustrate the extent of cryptocurrency fundraising by terrorist organizations, had been inaccurately presented.

Nonetheless, the know-your-customer and counter-terrorism measures adopted by cryptocurrency exchanges, notably Binance, have attracted greater attention over the past year. This heightened scrutiny has primarily emanated from regulatory bodies, particularly in the United States.

At the time of this request, there has been no immediate response from Binance to a request for comment.
