Block production in the zkSync Era protocol has been temporarily suspended

Dec 25, 2023

On December 25, 2023, around 9:00 AM Moscow time, the L2 solution zkSync Era encountered an unforeseen issue that led to the halt of block production at block height #22,364,805. This event caused a temporary suspension of the protocol's operation.

The zkSync Era development team confirmed the presence of "network issues" and is actively working on resolving them. They promised to publish a detailed report after a complete analysis and resolution of the error.

This is not the only incident with the zkSync Era protocol. Earlier, on December 16, the network experienced an overload caused by a sharp increase in the number of transactions to 150 per second following the launch of a project similar to Ordinals. As a result, the network ceased operation for 15 minutes, but functionality was successfully restored after a reboot.

During the previous incident, three main problems were identified: low database performance during peak loads, errors in the user interface, and a lagging block explorer.

It is worth noting that such problems are not unique to zkSync Era. For example, on December 15, the L2 solution Arbitrum One also stopped processing transactions due to increased network traffic, but its functionality was restored in less than two hours. And the blockchain The Open Network slowed its throughput to one transaction per second due to a failure caused by the popularity of an Ordinals-like project.

These events highlight the importance of reliability and scalability in blockchain technologies, especially in conditions of growing demand and increasing transaction volumes.
