In line with a press release from 404 Media, Multiple participants at the ApeFest convention, hosted by Yuga Labs, the parent company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), have reported suffering from severe eye discomfort and visual impairment following exposure to laser and "blacklight-intensive performances."
The event, which took place in Hong Kong from November 3 to 5, was exclusively open to holders of Bored Ape non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The reports of eye-related injuries have prompted Yuga Labs to launch an investigation to identify the underlying cause of this situation.
Attendees turned to social media platforms, including the X platform (formerly Twitter), to express their concerns. One user, known as "Crypto June," shared her experience of waking up in the middle of the night with intense pain and blurred vision, which she attributed to the UV lighting on the stage.
Another participant confirmed encountering similar problems related to eye discomfort and skin burns. Participants also noted the high intensity of blacklights in certain areas, such as restrooms.
Despite the eye-related issues, some attendees expressed appreciation for the event's organization and the opportunity to connect with others. However, they stressed the importance of receiving an official statement from Yuga Labs addressing the health risks faced by numerous individuals.
Bored Ape Yacht Club has acknowledged the problem and announced that they are actively reaching out to those affected to investigate potential causes. They estimated that less than 1% of attendees and staff experienced symptoms and encouraged those still affected to seek medical attention. BAYC's official X account stated:
According to a news report from DL, a minimum of 15 conference attendees have reported issues related to the flashing stage lights. Yuga Labs has initiated an investigation to determine the underlying cause of these eye injuries. The company is actively addressing concerns and improving participant safety.
Regarding Bored Ape Yacht Club, it currently has a minimum price of $53,686, with a 24-hour sales volume of 2,171 ETH. There are 9,998 NFTs in the collection, with 5,545 owned by individuals. The collection's estimated market capitalization is $536,752,440, but it has seen a significant 50% price decline this year.
