In a concerning development, Canadian authorities have issued a warning about a new wave of fraud targeting victims of cryptocurrency scams. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) logo is being misused by scammers to lure individuals into false recovery schemes. The publication provides the following information: these schemes are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it essential for individuals to remain vigilant.
Warning Issued Following Crypto Job Scam Incident
The warning comes in the wake of a specific incident in Nanaimo, British Columbia, where a resident who had previously lost approximately 5,000 CAD in a crypto job scam was approached by a fraudster. This individual claimed to have the ability to recover the lost funds, exploiting the victim's desperation for financial restitution.
Fraudulent Recovery Scheme Uncovered
After the victim filled out a form on a counterfeit RCMP notice, they received a phone call from a man impersonating a lawyer. This impersonator falsely asserted that he had identified accounts associated with the victim's lost funds. In response, the police have made it clear that the RCMP does not participate in any recovery operations and have urged the public to remain vigilant against unsolicited offers that promise financial recovery.
