Commission changes in L2 networks on Ethereum

Mar 16, 2024

After the implementation of the Dencun update Dencun on the Ethereum network, there has been a significant decrease in the average cost of transactions on second layer (L2) networks. This update included the proposal EIP-4844, introducing the concept of "proto-darksharding," which allowed the introduction of a new type of transactions in rollups through the aggregation of blob objects, substantially reducing the cost of blockchain usage.

Prior to the update, to demonstrate the reduction in transaction costs, an Ethereum developer uploaded the entire script of the movie "Bee Movie" to the network, costing only 5 dollars. Immediately after the hard fork implementation, platforms such as ZkSync, StarkNet, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism, and Zora supported the innovation, leading to a sharp decrease in average transactional costs.

Analytics from Dune shows that after the Dencun update, the average transaction cost on all mentioned L2 networks decreased several times, ranging from 0.004 to 0.137 dollars. The most noticeable reduction in fees is observed in the Zora network, where the average gas fee is now only 0.001 dollars.

While there have been no changes in transaction costs on the Ethereum mainnet, over 13 thousand blob objects have already been deployed on second-layer networks, with the majority attributed to StarkNet, followed by Base and Optimism.

This update marks a significant step towards reducing costs and increasing the efficiency of using the Ethereum blockchain technology, making it more accessible to a wider range of users.
