Cysic has taken decisive action by suspending its cross-chain bridge following a significant security breach. An attacker exploited vulnerabilities in the system, resulting in the unauthorized creation of 10 million CYS tokens on the BNB Chain. According to the authors of the publication, it is concerning that this incident has raised alarms about the overall security of cross-chain protocols.
Incident Overview
The incident escalated as the attacker managed to sell approximately 72 million CYS tokens, converting part of the supply into assets that were moved to Ethereum. This transaction resulted in the receipt of 3066 ETH, which was valued at around $727,000 at the time of the incident. In response to this breach, Cysic halted operations of its bridge to conduct a thorough investigation.
Security Challenges Highlighted
This attack underscores the persistent security challenges that cross-chain bridges face, particularly the risk of unauthorized token creation and sale before a project can effectively respond. Cysic is now focused on rectifying the failure in its message verification process and will need to communicate its corrective measures before it can resume normal operations.
In a related incident, Qubic has suspended its network operations due to a significant security breach, resulting in the loss of approximately $14 million in cryptocurrency. This alarming event highlights ongoing security challenges in the crypto space, as detailed in the report here.
