In a recent warning to cryptocurrency holders, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao highlighted the potential risks associated with hardware wallets. This alert follows a significant exploit that resulted in the theft of millions of dollars in Bitcoin from Coldcard devices, raising concerns about the security of these popular storage solutions. According to the official information, users are urged to take extra precautions to protect their assets.

Warning from Zhao on Hardware Wallets

Zhao took to X to remind users that hardware wallets, often considered the safest option for storing cryptocurrencies, are not infallible. He pointed out that even well-regarded models can harbor bugs, particularly older versions that may lack the latest security updates. To mitigate risks, Zhao recommended diversifying funds across multiple wallets, although he acknowledged that this approach has its own set of challenges.

Vulnerability Discovered in Coldcard Devices

The warning comes in the wake of a serious vulnerability discovered in Coldcard devices produced by Coinkite. A firmware issue allowed attackers to more easily guess private keys, leading to a massive theft on July 30, 2023. This incident affected 1,196 addresses and resulted in the loss of approximately 1,082.65 BTC, valued at around $702 million.

Coinkite's Response to the Exploit

In response to the exploit, Coinkite has issued emergency hotfixes and is urging users who were impacted to migrate to new seeds to enhance their security. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrency security.

Following the recent warning from Binance's Changpeng Zhao regarding hardware wallet vulnerabilities, Coinkite has revealed a critical security flaw in its Coldcard Mk3 wallets, leading to significant Bitcoin losses. For more details, see this report.
