The Pokémon Company has announced a new game for collecting virtual cards titled "Pokémon Pocket Collection Card Game". Following the announcement, there were concerns online that the game would include non-fungible tokens (NFTs), but company representatives have debunked these rumors. In an official statement to Polygon, it was emphasized that the Pokémon Company "has not developed or endorsed" the use of NFTs.
The game, developed jointly by Pokémon Company, Creatures Inc., and DeNA, developers of "Pokémon Masters EX", is focused on collecting digital cards. The arising questions about the possibility of selling these cards as NFTs were categorically rejected by company representatives, highlighting that any NFTs sold using Pokémon intellectual property are unofficial and not affiliated with The Pokémon Company International.
The statement also noted that the use of blockchain technology and NFTs seems inappropriate for a family brand like Pokémon, and that video game developers do not need NFTs to create valuable and limited virtual items. The game will be free to play, with the ability to open two booster packs for free daily, and there will be in-game purchases available for acquiring additional card decks.
