Aembit has published a 2024 report on non-human identity security. The report highlights the dependence of organizations on outdated methods and manual processes that do not provide adequate protection.

Relevance of the Topic

With the development of modern IT environments, non-human identities (NHI), such as applications, scripts, and service accounts, are gaining importance. This is especially relevant against the backdrop of the shift to distributed architectures and the widespread adoption of cloud technologies and automation.

Key Findings

According to the report, 88.5% of organizations admitted that their IAM (identity and access management) practices for non-human identities lag behind or are on par with those for user identities. Only 19.6% of respondents expressed confidence in their IAM practices for NHI. The report also indicated that 30.9% of respondents store long-term credentials in code, and 23.7% share secrets via copying and pasting, such as through email or messaging apps.

Expert Opinion

Aembit co-founder and CEO David Goldschlag noted, "Organizations are starting to recognize that non-human identities are more than just background tools. As businesses rapidly automate, NHIs play a critical role in digital ecosystems and often handle sensitive data. However, as our report shows, NHI security remains a significant task."

Aembit's review confirms that many organizations are struggling with identity management in complex multicloud environments and underscores the need for more holistic approaches.
