Analysis of Cryptocurrency Investments in May

Jun 13, 2024

The latest report from KuCoin's research division unveiled the cryptocurrency sector's investment landscape for May, revealing a total investment exceeding $1 billion, marking a slight decrease from the previous month's figures. KuCoin Research disclosed that there were 156 publicized investments in May, with a total capital inflow of $1.02 billion recorded. This amount indicated a 10.61% surge compared to May 2023 but showcased a 6.4% dip from April.

When it comes to investment trends, Ethereum, Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chains, and Layer-2 (L2) network projects continued to attract significant attention from institutional investors. Nonetheless, non-EVM chains such as Bitcoin, Solana, Fantom, and TON also secured spots among the top 15 favored networks by investors during May. Notably, Animoca Brands and OKX Ventures emerged as the most active investors in the past month, with Animoca Brands involved in 15 deals and OKX Ventures investing in 11 projects. Other notable investors in May included Cogitent Ventures, SNZ Holding, and DWF Labs, engaged in 10, 8, and 7 deals, respectively.

KuCoin Research highlighted a notable shift in investment behavior in May, as investors turned towards meme and celebrity tokens in response to concerns raised about the high fully diluted valuations (FDV) trend in the cryptocurrency market. Tokens launching with inflated valuations and limited circulating supplies led investors to explore alternative options. Notcoin (NOT) was specifically pointed out as a token that capitalized on this trend, experiencing significant growth following its launch with all tokens available from the outset. By June 3, NOT emerged as the fifth most-traded cryptocurrency, surpassing the trading volume of popular stablecoin USD Coin (USDC), and achieving a new all-time high price of $0.02896, propelling its market capitalization above the $2 billion mark.

The report suggests that market participants have diversified their focus towards character meme and celebrity meme tokens, obscure low-market-cap assets, and new narratives as a response to the prevailing market conditions. This adaptation to evolving trends in the cryptocurrency sector underscores the agility and innovation required for success in this competitive landscape.
