Analysis of Recent Transaction Surge in Sui Network

Jul 25, 2024

On April 3rd, Sui set a record with 41 million transactions, surpassing Solana's 27.7 million transactions on the same day. This spike in activity on Sui can be attributed to the use of 'spam' tokens, designed for intensive network stress testing.

The Role of Spam Tokens in Sui's Transaction Growth

Sui, which recently marked the 1-year anniversary of its mainnet, is a relatively new blockchain compared to the well-established Solana network. To evaluate and enhance its capabilities, Sui implemented a stress test involving the issuance of spam tokens. Each day, 1 billion tokens are distributed among users based on the volume of transactions they initiate.

This testing mechanism serves the dual purpose of evaluating the network's capacity and resilience while incentivizing community participation.

Network Stress Testing and Performance Enhancement

The core objective behind utilizing spam tokens in this manner is to simulate high-traffic scenarios on Sui's infrastructure. This simulation helps identify potential bottlenecks and refine overall performance. Throughout the stress test period, network throughput reached a peak of 863 transactions per second (TPS), stabilizing at around 650 TPS as confirmed by user reports.

According to Artemis, a blockchain analytics tool, the majority of transactions during the stress test period were related to the distribution and circulation of spam tokens.

Understanding the Spam Mechanism on Sui

Since the commencement of the stress test, over 65 million transactions have been logged on Sui. This number is expected to rise with more users joining to earn spam tokens. Despite the large transaction volume, user participation remains relatively low, with less than 60,000 unique participants. This low user count indicates a high level of engagement from a select group of users.

The spam system on Sui comprises two key components: - An on-chain mechanism to track user transactions, calculate rewards, and issue spam tokens based on transaction volume. - A web miner that enables users to easily generate numerous transactions.

This experimental approach not only assesses the technical capabilities of the network but also fosters a dynamic environment for user engagement. The integration of spam tokens with transaction activity encourages increased user involvement in the network's development.

Conclusion

The recent surge in transactions on the Sui network, driven by the utilization of spam tokens for stress testing, signifies a significant milestone for the platform. By actively involving the community in network assessment and enhancement processes, Sui demonstrates a proactive approach towards network scalability and performance.
