Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (A16z) will lead a $200 million financing round for the startup Periodic Labs, which focuses on materials science using artificial intelligence, with a pre-funding valuation of $1 billion.
Investment in Periodic Labs
Sources indicate that Periodic Labs initially selected OpenAI to lead the financing round but turned to Andreessen Horowitz due to a belief that the firm could provide better support. Nevertheless, OpenAI will remain involved in the funding process and may collaborate further with the startup.
Founders of Periodic Labs
Periodic Labs was founded by Liam Fedus, a former research leader at OpenAI instrumental in the creation of ChatGPT, and ex-DeepMind scientist Ekin Dogus Cubuk. The founders aim to leverage AI to analyze and discover new materials. Fedus even posted in March about his excitement for AI in science, sharing his desire to work with OpenAI as a partner.
State of the Venture Capital Market
Q2 2025 proved to be successful for AI startups, which raised over $1 billion from venture capital. In July 2025, the majority of funding, exceeding $200 million, was directed towards AI startups, capturing 37% of the total venture capital. Despite this, venture capital activity has cooled off compared to previous months.
The investment from Andreessen Horowitz into Periodic Labs underscores the growing interest among investors in startups founded by veterans in the AI industry, opening new avenues for research and innovation in materials science using AI.
