Apple has made updates to its App Store fees and rules to avoid possible large daily fines imposed by EU antitrust regulators.
Reduced App Store Fees
According to Apple's latest updates, developers will now be required to pay a 20% service fee, down from the previous 30%. Additionally, the fee will be reduced to 13% for small businesses.
The company also announced a fee range of 5% to 15%, directing clients to make payments outside the App Store. Developers will have access to links helping users find other suitable payment methods.
Apple's Response to EU Actions
In April, EU antitrust regulators took action against Apple for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA), alleging that the company had set limitations for developers looking to offer users cheaper payment alternatives. Apple was fined €500 million.
Following the fine, the company had 60 days to change its restrictions to comply with DMA regulations. Changes proposed by Apple are expected to be approved in the coming weeks, although this timeline may change.
Future of Changes and Legal Actions
After receiving the fine, Apple initiated a challenge against the regulator's decision in court. The company stated that the changes were made only to avoid fines and that they would present facts in court. Apple expressed discontent with the EU's actions, claiming that these measures create confusion among developers and negatively impact their clients.
The situation around the App Store policy changes remains uncertain, and many are awaiting the regulators' decision on Apple's proposals.
