Arrest Made in Theft of Bitcoin Mining Equipment in Los Angeles

Jul 3, 2024

The recent arrest made by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) involved a 27-year-old individual from Canyon Country suspected of stealing Bitcoin mining computers valued at around $579,000. Bryan Thola, the suspect, was apprehended last Thursday when authorities discovered the allegedly stolen equipment in his cargo van and a public storage unit. Thola was then booked into the Van Nuys Jail and released the following day on his own recognizance, as stated in the LAPD news release. The seized computers are crucial devices used in the Bitcoin mining process, responsible for verifying transactions and recording them on the cryptocurrency's blockchain.

The investigation into this case is being led by LAPD's Commercial Crimes Division, although the department has not revealed how they first learned about the stolen equipment. Incriminating photographs of the recovered computers neatly stacked inside a van and storage unit have been made public by the authorities. The LAPD is actively seeking public assistance in this matter, urging anyone with relevant information to reach out to the Commercial Crimes Division or utilize anonymous reporting options like LA Crime Stoppers.
