In light of recent reports on attacks on app-based drivers in Lagos and across Nigeria, the AUATON union has criticized Uber and Bolt for not adequately profiling passengers.
AUATON's Response to Attacks
The President of AUATON, Comrade Adedamola Adeniran, expressed concerns over frequent attacks on app-based drivers, stating that lack of rider profiling creates dangerous conditions for drivers. 'For years, platforms have refused to implement proper rider profiling systems, endangering the lives of our members,' said Adeniran.
Police Support and Warnings to Drivers
The union commended the police for recent arrests of gangs targeting drivers. Bolt's General Manager, Osi Oguah, appreciated the police's swift actions. Lagos State Commissioner, CP Olarenwaju Ishola, advised drivers to be cautious with passengers and to avoid taking more than one passenger if possible.
AUATON's Demands and Future Measures
Comrade Adeniran warned that the union might pursue legal action if Uber and Bolt continue to avoid dialogue and fail to enhance passenger safety. 'If they do not act swiftly to profile passengers and ensure justice for the families of deceased workers, we will be compelled to take legal measures to hold them accountable,' he stated.
Adeniran emphasized that recent driver attacks should serve as a wake-up call for stakeholders in the app-based transport industry to address urgent safety issues.
