Binance Phases Out Bitcoin Ordinals Support on NFT Marketplace

Apr 5, 2024
  • The Binance NFT marketplace will no longer accept BTC Ordinal deposits and transactions starting April 18.
  • After April 10, Bitcoin NFT-related airdrops, perks, and utilities will no longer be provided.

Binance has stopped supporting Bitcoin (BTC) non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in its marketplace shortly after introducing them. This decision was announced in a blog post on April 4 as part of efforts to streamline product offerings on the Binance NFT marketplace. Therefore, users will not be able to deposit or transact with Bitcoin Ordinals on the platform after April 18.

Moreover, as of April 10, the Binance NFT marketplace will cease to offer Bitcoin NFT-related airdrops, perks, and utilities. Bitcoin Ordinals, also known as Bitcoin NFTs, allow for digital content like images, text, and videos to be permanently stored on the Bitcoin blockchain.

The support for Bitcoin Ordinals was short-lived following their popularity surge after being introduced in late 2022. Casey Rodarmor developed a mechanism similar to Ethereum's NFTs that allows unique digital artworks to be integrated directly into Bitcoin transactions.

Users of Runestone NFT who are eligible for the airdrop are advised to liquidate their tokens by April 10, according to Binance. The integration of Bitcoin NFTs into Binance's ecosystem a year ago in May 2023 aimed to bring new opportunities to collectors.

The large volume of NFT transactions on the Bitcoin network has caused congestion, resulting in higher fees and slower processing times due to increased on-chain verifications. Dune Analytics data shows that the network has processed 64 million inscriptions so far, accumulating $423 million in transaction fees.
