Changpeng Zhao Begins Serving Four-Month Sentence in Low-Security Prison

Jun 4, 2024

The Arrival of Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao at a Low-Security Federal Prison

Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, has checked in at a low-security federal prison in Southern California to begin his four-month sentence. This move places Zhao in a unique position as the wealthiest individual to serve time in a US prison. In a recent ranking by Forbes, Zhao was listed as the richest person in the cryptocurrency sector with a significant fortune amounting to $33 billion.

Zhao’s Time at Lompac II Prison

Upon his arrival, Zhao was registered as inmate 88087-510 at the Lompac II prison in Southern California, which currently houses around 2,160 inmates. Notably, this facility has previously accommodated other notable individuals such as Reed Slatkin, who faced allegations related to orchestrating a major Ponzi scheme.

Low-security prisons like Lompac II are typically known for providing relatively better living conditions compared to high-security facilities. Prisoners at Lompac II have the opportunity to engage in agricultural work at a nearby farm, taking care of animals and cultivating produce.

The contrast in living conditions between Lompac II and the New York prison where Sam Bankman-Fried, the co-founder of FTX, is serving a 25-year sentence, is quite evident.

The Background of Zhao’s Sentence

Zhao’s sentence stems from his failure to implement an anti-money laundering system at Binance. As part of his punishment, he has been directed to pay a substantial $50 million fine in addition to the four-month prison term imposed on him. Originally, the prosecution had requested a 36-month prison sentence, while Zhao’s legal team advocated for a five-month probation instead.

Zhao’s Apology and Intentions

Prior to his sentencing, Zhao penned a letter addressed to Judge Richard Jones, expressing his regrets for the shortcomings in compliance measures at Binance. He emphasized his desire to resolve the charges and embark on a new phase in his life.

In his letter, Zhao conveyed his aspiration to rectify his errors, close this chapter, and embrace a fresh start. While Zhao’s future involvement with Binance and the cryptocurrency industry remains uncertain, he has exhibited a keen interest in supporting educational initiatives and promoting the adoption of blockchain technology.
