Coinbase has announced the beginning of exploration for a network token for its Ethereum solution Base at BaseCamp 2025 in Vermont.
Change in Coinbase's Stance on Tokens
Coinbase had previously stated that it had no plans to launch a token; however, now with Base achieving fast, low-cost transactions, the company is considering a token as a means for decentralization and community engagement.
quote: "Base is beginning to explore a network token. We’re in the early phases of exploration, and don’t have any specifics to share around timing, design, or governance. We’re committed to bringing the community along with us, and building in the open."
Bridge Between Base and Solana
Coinbase has also announced an open-source bridge between Base and Solana, which will allow users to move assets seamlessly between the two chains. The bridge is live on testnet and will roll out on mainnet in the coming weeks.
Supporting Developer Growth
The Base Batches 002 developer program will kick off on September 29. It is designed to guide developers through building their projects, offering mentorship, funding, and global exposure to help turn fresh ideas into fully developed products.
The exploration of a network token, the introduction of a cross-chain bridge, and continued support for developers highlight Coinbase’s ambition to build a decentralized and interconnected on-chain ecosystem.
