Base Network, an Ethereum layer-2 solution from Coinbase, experienced its first outage since 2023, impacting core functionalities.
Cause of the Outage
The outage occurred at 09:15 and lasted for 29 minutes. The primary cause was identified as a technical issue termed 'unsafe head delay', which disrupted the network's ability to produce and confirm blocks.
Team's Response
The Base team initiated a response at 09:43. Just one minute later, they reported the issue was identified and resolved, and the network was back to normal. They also implemented a monitoring mechanism to prevent further issues.
Significance of the Incident
Although brief, this outage is significant, especially considering Base's history of uninterrupted operation and its growing prominence in the Ethereum Layer-2 ecosystem. Since its launch, Base has achieved a total value locked of $4.2 billion, with $1.5 billion tied to its lending protocol Morpho.
Thus, while the incident was short-lived, it underscores the importance of technical reliability in the development of layer-2 networks on Ethereum.
