Concerns Raised Over zkSync's Token Airdrop and Sybil Attacks

zkSync, an Ethereum scaling solution, has recently faced criticism for its ZK token airdrop lacking anti-Sybil measures. This issue has raised concerns within the industry regarding the potential vulnerability to Sybil attacks, which could result in an unfair distribution of tokens and create market instability.

A Sybil attack occurs when an entity creates multiple wallets to claim airdropped tokens unfairly. This undermines the equitable distribution of tokens by concentrating them in the hands of a select few participants.

On June 11, zkSync revealed plans to airdrop approximately 3.68 billion of its native tokens to the community, amounting to 17.5% of the total token supply of 21 billion. A total of 695,232 wallets were identified as eligible for this airdrop, with a cap of 100,000 tokens per wallet.

In response to the concerns raised, zkSync outlined seven eligibility criteria as a safeguard against Sybil attacks. These criteria include interacting with smart contracts, trading ERC-20 tokens, and participating in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols.

Despite these measures, industry experts, including Adam Cochran from Cinneamhain Ventures, have criticized the planning of the airdrop. Cochran highlighted the ease with which 'farmers' could meet the eligibility criteria using scripts and bots, potentially disadvantaging regular users who are less involved in such activities.

Furthermore, reports from Sybil-tracking accounts suggest that a substantial number of ZK tokens could be captured by wallets identified as potential Sybil addresses. This has prompted Polygon's Mudit Gupta to describe zkSync's airdrop as highly susceptible to farming, pointing out the lack of effective Sybil filtering.

Nansen, an analytics firm, also came under scrutiny for not conducting anti-Sybil checks or providing guidance on the airdrop allocation. While the project was made aware of certain wallet segments, including 'whales' and known scammers, users criticized Nansen for perceived lapses in diligence.

On a different note, Ignas, a prominent crypto researcher, highlighted zkSync's deliberate decision mentioned in the airdrop announcement to forego strict Sybil criteria, citing concerns that such measures could inadvertently exclude genuine users through arbitrary filters.

Despite these various concerns and criticisms, zkSync has yet to address the allegations surrounding its token airdrop and the associated vulnerabilities to Sybil attacks.
