The termination of services by Gate.io for Japanese customers was attributed to regulatory pressures and “compliance requests” from the country’s financial regulators. Gate.io, a crypto exchange, announced the cessation of services for all Japanese clients on July 22. The company stated its commitment to aiding affected customers in transferring their assets to alternative platforms. Effective immediately, the exchange, headquartered in the Cayman Islands, will halt the opening of new accounts for customers residing in Japan.
Gate.io mentioned that the closure was a response to “compliance requests” from authorities like the Financial Services Agency, with plans to provide additional information regarding the shutdown in the near future. In an effort to align with Japanese regulations, Gate.io will initiate a program to ensure compliance with local laws and support customers by facilitating their migration to exchanges that adhere to Japanese regulatory standards.
As part of its compliance strategy, Gate.io will eliminate any Japanese language content from its website while delivering updates to assist with customer account migration. The process of terminating services and migrating transactions will be conducted in accordance with the compliance requests issued by Japan’s financial regulator, the Financial Services Agency.
Despite these actions, no specific timeline was provided for the final shutdown of the exchange in Japan. Japan, recognized globally as a hub for cryptocurrencies, was among the early adopters of legalizing crypto trading, albeit with stringent regulations governing crypto assets.
The regulation of crypto assets in Japan falls under the Payment Services Act (PSA), mandating exchanges to register with the FSA. In addition, exchanges must adhere to anti-money laundering (AML) regulations and implement customer identity verification procedures.
Gate.io, which boasts a listing of 3,557 trading pairs and a global 24-hour trading volume of $19.5 billion as reported by CoinGecko, did not respond immediately to inquiries from Cointelegraph seeking further clarification.
Despite the regulatory challenges, some Japanese enterprises remain optimistic about Bitcoin investments. On July 22, the Japanese investment and consulting firm Metaplanet disclosed the acquisition of an additional 20.4 BTC valued at approximately $1.2 million to fulfill its investment plans unveiled in June.
