The first half of 2025 revealed a significant divergence in interest between institutional and retail investors in the crypto market, with increased investments in major cryptocurrencies and a shift in focus for retail participants towards altcoins.

Institutional Investment in Cryptocurrencies

According to Wintermute's *H1 2025 OTC Market Report*, institutional investors have ramped up their investments in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), maintaining a hefty 67% allocation in these two cryptocurrencies, indicating sustained support for leading crypto assets.

Shifts in Retail Investor Interests

In contrast, retail investors have sharply reduced their holdings in Bitcoin and Ethereum to just 37%. There appears to be a clear trend of shifting investments towards alternative cryptocurrencies or altcoins, marking this as the widest divergence since 2023.

Trends in Trading and Meme Coin Positions

The report also highlighted a growing preference among institutional investors for over-the-counter (OTC) trading, which surged 2.4 times faster than volumes on centralized exchanges (CEX). Institutional players seek efficient ways to execute large trades. Furthermore, there's a notable rise in interest in new meme coins like Bonk (BONK), Dogwifhat (WIF), and Popcat (POPCAT), which are gaining traction at the expense of older meme coins like Dogecoin (DOGE).

Thus, the first half of 2025 showcased substantial changes in the dynamics of investor interests in the crypto market, highlighting the strong positions of institutional investors and the evolving preferences of retail participants.
