A major cryptocurrency investor fell victim to a phishing attack and lost 55 million DAI. The incident occurred due to the use of the phishing tool Inferno Drainer.

The Incident

According to PeckShieldAlert, the investor (or 'whale') faced an attack that led to the loss of a total of 55 million DAI. According to the information, a Maker Vault user lost the specified amount in a phishing attack.

Use of Inferno Drainer

According to security firm CertiK, the attacker likely gained access to the investor's account using the phishing tool Inferno Drainer, which uses fake websites or emails representing legitimate exchanges or DeFi protocols to steal the user's private information.

Consequences

The crypto whale signed a transaction that changed the ownership of 55.47 million DAI on the Maker protocol. As a result of the signed transaction, the specified amount was transferred to the address set by the attacker. When the investor realized their mistake, they tried to pull back the DAI but failed as the funds had already been transferred to the attacker's address. The attacker then converted 27.4 million DAI to 10.82 Ethereum. In a second transaction, they exchanged 1.8 billion DAI for 706.5 ETH and transferred 19.4 ETH to a new address.

This incident serves as a reminder of the need for increased caution when interacting with cryptocurrency addresses and links. Using reliable security measures and attention to detail can prevent such incidents in the future.
