Cybersecurity Breach at Lykke Exchange

Jun 11, 2024

Lykke, a U.K.-based cryptocurrency exchange, disclosed a loss exceeding $22 million following a cyberattack targeting its wallet in early June. The exchange experienced the attack on June 4, prompting the immediate shutdown of affected systems to limit the damage. Although the specific details of the hack were not disclosed, the breach resulted in the illicit withdrawal of 158 BTC and 2,161 ETH from the exchange's wallet.

Lykke reassured customers that their funds were secure and undertook a thorough examination to address the security breaches. The exchange highlighted its financial stability, mentioning solid capital reserves and a diversified portfolio.

As a preventive measure, Lykke suspended both withdrawals and deposits without a specified timeframe for resuming operations. The platform remains inactive until further information is provided to users.

The incident ranks as one of the significant cryptocurrency thefts in the second quarter, following a substantial hack on a Japanese Bitcoin exchange earlier in the quarter. It underscores the persistent security challenges faced by cryptocurrency exchanges and the necessity for robust protective measures to safeguard digital assets.
