Authorities finally received an official statement from OpenAI regarding the controversial death of former researcher Suchir Balaji. The organization expressed condolences while refusing to comment on whistleblower allegations.

Official Statement by OpenAI

OpenAI released an official statement on 'X' (formerly Twitter), referring to Balaji as a 'valued member' of the team and extending their condolences. The organization also stated that they have offered assistance to the San Francisco Police Department. Nevertheless, they declined to comment on claims pertaining to Balaji's whistleblower activities.

He was a valued member of our team.

Circumstances of the Death

Suchir Balaji was found deceased in his San Francisco apartment on November 26 of last year. Initially labeled a suicide by police, Balaji's family contends that he was murdered due to his whistleblower activities against OpenAI. His mother insists on further investigation, claiming his death was ominously tied to his work and the threat he posed to the company.

Balaji's Contribution and Criticism

Suchir Balaji started at OpenAI in 2018 after graduating from UC Berkeley, eventually becoming a full-time researcher working on ChatGPT. In 2024, he left the organization, accusing OpenAI of copyright violations against artists and content creators. He provided an interview to The New York Times, criticizing OpenAI's use of technology, stating his belief that it was not being used for the welfare of humankind.

The resolution of Suchir Balaji’s death requires thorough investigation. OpenAI has extended its condolences while declining to comment, as Balaji's family insists on further exploration of the potential causes of his death.
