The Nigerian government is continuing the repatriation of foreign nationals convicted of cyber crimes. The total number deported has reached 102.
Deportation of Foreign Nationals
The Federal Government of Nigeria has deported 51 foreign nationals convicted of cyber crimes. This brings the total number of deported individuals since the exercise started on Friday, August 15, 2025, to 102. This operation is being carried out in collaboration with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
Recent Cyber Crime Events
Among the repatriated individuals are 50 Chinese and one Tunisian national. These foreign nationals were arrested during an operation against cyber crimes in Lagos, which also involved the arrest of 192 foreign nationals. Previously, during a major raid, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested 792 suspects involved in high-level cyber crime.
Government Initiatives Against Cyber Crime
In response to the increasing level of cyber crime, the federal government launched a Cyber Crime Response Academy in July. The program is designed for the rehabilitation of convicted cyber criminals and includes training in digital skills as well as monthly stipends. Despite criticism, the initiative aims to redirect the expertise of these individuals for the benefit of Nigerian society.
The ongoing deportations and new initiatives highlight Nigeria's determination to combat cyber crime and improve the country's image.
