District of Columbia Attorney General Reaches $40 Million Settlement with Bitcoin Bull Michael Saylor

Jun 3, 2024

The attorney general of the District of Columbia recently announced a substantial $40 million settlement with Michael Saylor, the prominent figure behind Bitcoin and the MicroStrategy company. This agreement comes as a resolution to a 2022 tax fraud case where Saylor and his enterprise agreed to pay the said amount.

In response to allegations of income tax evasion, Saylor agreed to the $40 million settlement to put an end to the lawsuit. This case was highlighted as one of the most significant income tax evasion instances in the county's history. Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb emphasized that no individual, regardless of wealth or influence, is exempt from the law. He condemned Saylor's actions and emphasized the detrimental impact of the fraud on the county and its residents.

Saylor acknowledged the settlement as a means to alleviate the legal burden on his friends, family, and himself. The District of Columbia attorney general specifically accused Saylor of evading $25 million in taxes through fraudulent tax returns spanning from 2005 to 2020.

The lawsuit alleged that Saylor provided false information on his tax returns, claiming residence in states with lower income tax rates than Washington. This misleading information led to a significant tax evasion scheme, affecting the county and its inhabitants.
