On September 7, 2025, El Salvador announced the purchase of 21 Bitcoin to commemorate the fourth anniversary of its legalization.
Purchase of 21 Bitcoin
President Nayib Bukele confirmed the purchase on platform X, noting that the acquisition amounted to approximately $2.3 million. With this latest purchase, the total Bitcoin held in the country’s reserve is now 6,313.18 BTC, valued at around $701.4 million.
Strategy and Achievements
El Salvador became the first country to legalize Bitcoin in September 2021. As part of its strategy, the government continues to educate the population about cryptocurrency: all students aged seven and up are now required to learn about Bitcoin. The country follows a 'one Bitcoin a day' approach, with this week’s purchases totaling 28 BTC.
Challenges and Future Plans
Despite active purchases, the IMF has requested that the country halt public Bitcoin acquisitions as part of a $1.4 billion loan agreement. Nevertheless, Bukele reassured that El Salvador will continue buying Bitcoin regardless of international pressure. In August, the country split its Bitcoin holdings into 14 separate wallets to protect against potential threats such as quantum computing attacks.
El Salvador firmly adheres to its cryptocurrency strategy, thus strengthening its position as a pioneer in the legalization of digital assets.
