Elon Musk Expands Free Premium Features on X, Attracting Crypto Scammers

Mar 28, 2024

Elon Musk recently revealed that verified accounts with 2,500 subscribers on X will no longer have to pay for "Premium" features, along with free access to "Premium+" for accounts with more than 5,000 followers.

X offers a subscription service with three premium tiers that offer additional features for creators using the platform. The introduction of paid verification on X, previously known as "Twitter Blue," was done by Musk to combat scammers and spammers.

Despite Musk's effort to provide free premium services to verified accounts, there are concerns within the crypto community that the Premium features could still be exploited by scammers to target potential victims more efficiently.

While some individuals saw Musk's decision in a positive light, skeptics raised concerns about possible loopholes and the lack of transparency regarding the platform's internal mechanisms for determining eligibility.

There are worries that the new feature could potentially encourage large groups of scammers to collaborate and use fake accounts for various types of cyberattacks. Some users hinted at a loophole where accounts could follow each other to claim free premium services without payment.

X has been working to address the issue of verified scam accounts, including reducing the pricing for verified organizations on the platform to combat crypto-related scams and malicious campaigns targeting users.

A recent report from CloudSEK highlighted that a Twitter Gold account is essential for conducting large-scale malicious campaigns, particularly those involving job and crypto scams.

However, some speculate that the price reduction for verified accounts may have been a strategy to attract more paid subscribers to the platform.
