The Privacy Stewards of Ethereum (PSE) has unveiled a roadmap aimed at enhancing privacy on the Ethereum blockchain, warning against the risks of global surveillance.
Key Priorities of the Roadmap
PSE has outlined three key priorities:
- Ensuring affordable and seamless private actions on-chain. - Creating private reads to allow access to information without revealing identity. - Developing private proving to expedite proof generation and verification while maintaining confidentiality.
Risks of Global Surveillance
PSE noted that "Ethereum is on the path to becoming the settlement layer for the world, but without strong privacy it risks becoming the backbone of global surveillance rather than global freedom."
US Regulation and Privacy Initiatives
The roadmap comes as discussions are underway in the US about potential identity checks for smart contracts, raising concerns in the pro-privacy crypto community. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasizes that privacy is an essential human right.
The PSE roadmap aims to prevent Ethereum from becoming a tool for global surveillance and to protect user privacy in light of increasing regulatory requirements.
