Ethereum at 3-Year Low vs. Bitcoin; Is the Flippening Over?

Apr 5, 2024

Ethereum (ETH) has hit a low point against Bitcoin (BTC) in a 3-year timeframe, reaching 0.04872 BTC. This challenges the concept of “the flippening” that Ethereum fans talk about.

Barchart reported these new lows on April 5, showing a daily price chart for ETH/BTC. It illustrates Ethereum surpassing the previous low from January 2024 against Bitcoin.

These declines started in September 2022 post the crypto market crash. During the crash, Ethereum saw a significant drop against Bitcoin, hitting previous lows at 0.04908 BTC.

The recent trends have sparked discussions about Ethereum's potential to outshine Bitcoin's market cap, also known as “the flippening.” This idea is based on the belief that ETH is a superior store of value compared to BTC due to better economic fundamentals and demand.

Although some traders interpret the 3-year low as a sign that “the flippening” might not happen, others see it as a chance to buy in. Matt’s Investing Journey expressed optimism in Barchart's post.

In response to these market movements, Finbold analyzed the ETH/BTC chart, focusing on monthly candles over time. Historically, whenever Ethereum has crossed the 0.04880 price level against Bitcoin, it has rallied significantly. This level has provided crucial support for ETH/BTC, leading to price surges after hitting it.

Similar movements occurred in April 2017, November 2017, May 2021, and June 2022, resulting in substantial gains for Ethereum against Bitcoin, rewarding ETH investors.

Despite the recent downtrend showing Ethereum's decline against Bitcoin in the past three years, it also suggests that ETH could potentially outperform BTC in the mid-term if the trend were to reverse.
